Developed to support council and district volunteers in teaching safe climbing techniques to Scout leaders and Scouts. Participants may qualify as a climbing instructor, director or inspector. Participants will be divided into two groups based on their skill level. This course is strenuous and includes rock climbing, rappelling and hiking to and from the site. Advanced students must have experience climbing/rappelling in natural settings and rigging protection. Participants must pass the Philmont backcountry physical. This course takes place at a remote location, therefore participants will not have an opportunity to be with their family members during the week.
Philmont Scout Ranch, the Boy Scouts of America's premier High Adventure™ base, challenges Scouts and Venturers with more than 214 square miles of rugged northern New Mexico wilderness. Backpacking treks, horseback cavalcades, and training and service programs offer young people many ways to experience this legendary country.
