Camp Ranger Basic
The Philmont Camp Ranger Basic course is a comprehensive training program designed for new Camp Rangers or individuals fulfilling the role of resident property manager with responsibilities for property maintenance at Boy Scouts of America (BSA) camps. The training is aimed at equipping participants with a blend of soft skills and technical knowledge necessary for the effective management and maintenance of camp properties.

Soft Skills and Professional Development
Participants will receive training in various soft skills crucial for their role, including:

  • Communications: Enhancing interpersonal and formal communication skills.
  • Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating potential risks associated with camp operations.
  • Customer Service: Providing excellent service to camp visitors and stakeholders.
  • Operations: Understanding the operational aspects of camp management.
  • Managing Others: Effective techniques for supervising and leading teams.
  • Time Management: Efficiently managing one’s time to balance multiple responsibilities.
  • BSA Structure and Regulations: Knowledge of the organizational structure and regulatory environment of the BSA.
  • Emergency Procedures: Preparedness and response strategies for emergencies.

Technical Knowledge
The course also covers a wide range of technical skills necessary for the maintenance and improvement of camp facilities, including:
Carpentry: Basic woodwork and construction techniques.
Plumbing: Maintenance and repair of plumbing systems.
Equipment Maintenance: Keeping camp equipment in working order.
Welding: Basic welding skills for repairs and projects.
Fire Prevention: Strategies and measures to prevent fire hazards.
Electrical Maintenance: Basic electrical repair and maintenance skills.
Chain Saw Operation: Safe and effective use of chainsaws.
Vehicle Operation: Proper use and maintenance of camp vehicles.
Training Details
The 2024 Camp Ranger Basic Training is scheduled for March 3-8 at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. A pre-course opportunity for Chainsaw Certification is available on March 1-2 for an additional cost. The training is facilitated by a select faculty, including tenured rangers, camp managers, and subject matter experts in various trade skills.
To qualify for the in-person course, Rangers must complete a series of e-learning modules covering fundamental Scouting topics such as programs, time management, and working with volunteers. These modules are available on the Scouting University- Employee Learn Center, accessible through MyBSA – Resources.
Eligibility and Registration
Eligible participants include new Camp Rangers or individuals serving as resident property managers with responsibilities for property maintenance. Camp Ranger Basic training must be obtained within 12 months of the date of employment.
