Mountain Trek

  • 6 days and nights
  • Fee: $750 in 2020

  • Register: By individual (parent/guardian must attend a PTC program or conference)
  • Season: Summer
  • Age:  14 years of age OR 13 years of age and have completed the 8th grade and not yet 21
  • Crew Size: Provisional Crew will be organized by Philmont
  • Leadership: 2 adult leaders provided by Philmont Ranger Department

The Mountain Trek program is designed specifically for the sons and daughters of Training Center conference participants. These treks coincide with PTC conference schedules, departing on Sunday afternoon and returning Saturday morning.

Mountain Trek crews hike 20 to 30 miles into the backcountry, where participants stay at several camps that offer a variety of exciting programs along with time to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Philmont. Participants are organized into male or female crews, and are supervised by experienced Philmont Mountain Trek Rangers. Groups with fewer than 10 participants may be combined to form a coed crew with both male and female Ranger leadership.

Special for 2020 – Kodiak Mountain Trek

Kodiak Mountain Trek is advanced backcountry experiential training that builds on information learned in unit, council, and national-level BSA leadership courses.

Using Philmont’s backcountry as your classroom, you will spend the week backpacking and camping all while using the Kodiak curriculum as a core for your experience. Adult leadership is provided with two Philmont Rangers who are trained for the Kodiak experience. Kodiak recognition is earned through successful completion of this course.

  • Be at least 14 years of age OR 13 years of age and have completed the 8th grade and not yet 21.
  • Be a registered youth member of a Boy Scouts of America program.
  • Have completed the Introduction to Leadership Skills Course before attending.
  • Complete a BSA Annual Health and Medical Record.

 

What Equipment Will I Need?

Philmont will provide all crew equipment (including tents, cooking gear, and food). Participants should bring only the equipment on the Mountain Trek Packing List found in the Mountain Trek Guidebook. LEARN MORE

Mountain Trek Information Form

After reading the Mountain Trek Guidebook and registering online, Mountain Trek participants are requested to fill out the Mountain Trek Information Form, located in the Guidebook. This form is a useful resource for your Philmont Rangers, who will be separating you into a Mountain Trek Crew, and leading your trek. You may email your form to the Philmont Training Center at Philmont.TrainingCenter@scouting.org or mail completed application to:

Shuttle Information

Shuttle service is available to Philmont from Denver, Colorado Springs and Albuquerque airports. Please download a shuttle form below. These shuttles are not available for 12-day, 9-day, 7-day, or cavalcade crews. 

Please note that the shuttle servicing Denver and Colorado Springs cannot transport a Scout with “unaccompanied minor” airline status.
