Philmont Scout Ranch is excited to announce the partnership with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and National Geographic Fellow Paul Salopek on his Out of Eden Walk. In 2013, Paul began a seven-year journey walking around the world in an effort to retrace the migration of our oldest ancestors – from their birthplace in Ethiopia to the Middle East, Asia, North America, and down to the southern tip of South America. On the walk, he is “engaging with the major stories of our time – from climate change to technological innovation, from mass migration to cultural survival – by walking alongside the people who inhabit these headlines every day. Moving at the slow beat of his footsteps, Paul is seeking the quieter, hidden stories of people who rarely make the news.”
Working with an educational team from Philmont and the Pulitzer Center, Paul created two videos to share information about his journey with Philmont participants at the Opening and Closing Campfires. He challenged the participants to document their milestones and experiences in their Passport Journals throughout the trek. He encouraged them to slow down and be more intentional, reflective, and thoughtful both at Philmont and in their walks of life. Watch the video below to see how this partnership has renewed the focus of journaling at Philmont Scout Ranch.
