2019 was Philmont’s largest summer ever!

Philmont Scout Ranch is excited to announce that the 2019 summer camping season is the largest in its 81 year history, with 24,029 Scouts hiking through the Sangre De Christo mountains this summer. This peak season comes after Philmont was forced to cancel the 2018 season due to fires.

The previous record was set in 2012 with 23,325 participants.

More than 1.6 million miles were hiked this summer, and more than 72,150 hours of conservation work were completed on Philmont and neighboring properties.

This summer would not have been possible without the support of our neighbors, many of which allowed Scouts to hike and camp on their property. “I want to extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation to all the neighboring land owners and government entities who allowed trespass rights in order to extend our programming and fulfill our mission based high adventure experiences,” said Roger Hoyt, Philmont’s General Manager.  “Members of our community also stepped up to support Philmont Scout Ranch operations, as employees and business owners, to provide valuable goods and services to our Scouts and leaders. This year has been a total team effort, and I am thankful to all who had a hand in our success.”

This summer 1,303 individuals served on the Seasonal staff and represented all 50 states as well as 4 foreign countries.

Preparations for the 2020 camping seasons and beyond are already happening! There are still opportunities to attend Philmont this fall and next summer.
