Seasonal Staff Opportunities

Each summer, more than 23,000 scouts travel from all corners of the US and abroad to participate in the rich backcountry program and trekking opportunities available at Philmont Scout Ranch. 35 staffed backcountry camps scattered throughout the 140,171-acre facility provide assorted programs ranging from rock climbing to horseback riding to mine tours and living history. Since 1939, Philmont programs have attracted more than 1 million participants. The Philmont property also serves as the national training center for the Boy Scouts of America.

Philmont hires more than 1,100 summer staff to operate and support outdoor skills training, backcountry programs, living history programs, a national training center, food service, maintenance, retail operations, guest services, museums, ranching and horse programs, and administration. 

Length of employment varies with job assignment, but the majority of summer contracts run from MAY 25th to AUGUST 22nd. Hiring for the summer season occurs from September to April. There is no application deadline. 

Salary is based on positions responsibility with consideration given to the individual’s experience. Starting base salary is more than $1,150 per month plus room and board. Basic staff uniform parts are provided at no cost.

The hiring process usually lasts from January through April. If you haven’t heard from us by March you may call and request an update on the status of your application.

Philmont Staff Association

The Philmont Staff Association is an independent organization, separate from the Boy Scouts of America, that supports current and former staff at Philmont Scout Ranch. 

Connect with current, past, and future members through reunions, PSA treks, and the bi-monthly High Country publication. Support projects that will benefit future staff and contribute to the scholarship fund which awards trek scholarships to participants and academic scholarships to staff members.
