June 13-16 | The Retention Connection: How Relationships Build Belonging and Strengthen Scouting
Fee: $250

How Relationships Build Belonging and Strengthen Scouting

Why do some Scouts, families, and leaders become deeply connected to Scouting while others quietly drift away? We often look for the answer in better programs, stronger recruiting, or improved unit operations. Those things matter. But there is another factor that may matter even more: people stay where they feel they belong.

“The Retention Connection” is a half-week conference that will benefit Commissioners and Direct Contact Leaders who want to look beyond membership numbers and understand the human relationships behind them. Drawing upon the principles of David Weyrick’s popular ReTENtion book, the conference explores how positive relationships create the trust, friendship, connection, and sense of significance that turn participation into belonging, and belonging into retention.

Participants will examine the small but powerful “signals of belonging” that tell Scouts, parents, and leaders: You are known. You are valued. You are needed. There is a place for you here. We will explore hospitality and first impressions; learning and using names; noticing who is missing; seeing those on the edges; strengthening friendships and patrol relationships; building parent trust; encouraging meaningful contributions; recognizing progress; and creating cultures where people genuinely want to return. These are not complicated programs. They are intentional relational practices that can profoundly influence a unit’s health.

Through discussion, case studies, activities, and practical application, Scouters will consider how to recognize the relational health of the units they serve and help unit leaders create environments where relationships flourish. Because a healthy unit is more than one with positive numbers, good meetings, trained leaders, and a strong calendar. It is a community where people know one another, trust one another, notice one another, and need one another.

Participants will leave Philmont with a fresh perspective on retention and practical tools they can use immediately in their service. The goal isn’t simply to keep Scouts’ names on a roster. It is to help create units where Scouts have friends, parents have confidence, leaders feel supported, absence is noticed, contribution matters, and people can genuinely say: “These are my people. I matter here. I belong here.”

Because when people belong, they have a reason to stay.

June 13-19 | New Scouting U Certified Volunteer Training Leader (CVTL)
Fee: $430
Register Now: Click Here
Certified Volunteer Training Leader (CVTL) course is a new national development experience designed for the volunteers who shape how every other volunteer learns, grows, and succeeds. If you serve as a District or Council Training Chair—or support training in any capacity—this course strengthens the core skills that allow you to build a capable, confident, and motivated training team.

Effective training leaders must understand volunteers’ needs, develop capable trainers, recruit participants, promote learning opportunities, evaluate training effectiveness, and continuously improve the training program.
Over four immersive days at the Philmont Training Center, you’ll deepen your understanding of how volunteers learn, how training programs thrive, and how strong leadership transforms a council or district’s culture of development.

You’ll learn and practice skills in the following areas:
  • Creating an individualized onboarding experience
  • Using data to assess training needs
  • Development of a strategic training plan
  • Become more effective and confident in leading and developing people
  • Drive effective learning
  • Cultivate a culture of learning
  • Better evaluate the impact of training
All of these are hands-on skills that directly translate into stronger unit leaders and better youth experiences. The program emphasizes doing, not just listening, so you return home with practical tools, templates, and strategies ready for immediate use.
Participants should leave Philmont with significant resources that can be immediately adapted and used within their councils and districts.

Most importantly, this course helps you build the team around you. Training Chairs rarely succeed alone; they succeed by developing other trainers, empowering new volunteers, and creating a sustainable pipeline of leaders who can teach, coach, and mentor others. The Certified Volunteer Training Leader course prepares you to lead that broader effort—strengthening your knowledge base, expanding your influence, and equipping you to elevate the entire volunteer development ecosystem in your district or council.

Turning Relationships and Belonging into Retention

Why do some Scouts, families, and volunteers become deeply engaged in Scouting while others quietly drift away? Why do they stay? Why do they leave? And what can we intentionally do about it?

Where Scouts Belong is a practical exploration of one of Scouting’s most important challenges: membership retention. Rather than viewing retention simply as keeping names on a roster, this conference examines the experiences that keep young people, families, and volunteers engaged in Scouting and the conditions that can cause them to disconnect.

At the heart of retention is something fundamentally human: people are more likely to stay where they feel they belong. And belonging is built through relationships and experiences that tell people they are known, valued, trusted, noticed, and needed.

Participants will explore the practical behaviors that create these signals of belonging: welcoming a family before they reach the meeting room, learning and using names, noticing who is missing, seeing those who may be overlooked, strengthening friendships, creating meaningful opportunities to contribute, mentoring young people, earning parents’ trust, recognizing progress, and celebrating the journey. Individually, these may seem like small things. Together, they create a culture people want to be part of and return to.

But understanding why people stay is only the beginning. Throughout the conference, participants will continually ask a practical question: What can I do differently in my unit, district, or council that could affect whether someone stays?

Through discussion, activities, case studies, reflection, and practical application, participants will examine the connection between relationships, experience, engagement, belonging, and retention. We will explore hospitality and first impressions; known, liked, and trusted relationships; friendship and the power of the patrol or den; listening and noticing; caring adults and mentorship; parent trust; meaningful contribution; recognition; conflict and relationship repair; and the leadership behaviors that transform participation in a program into membership in a community.

The conference will also look beyond the currently registered member. Scouting has generations of former Scouts, parents, and leaders whose active participation may have ended, but whose connection to Scouting need not end with it. Participants will explore “rebelonging.” That is intentionally reconnecting alumni with the relationships, memories, values, and sense of identity that once made Scouting important to them. When former members discover that there is still a place for them in the Scouting community, renewed engagement, service, mentoring, advocacy, and generosity can follow.

Participants will leave Philmont not simply with ideas but with practical strategies and an action plan to improve retention in the communities they serve. The goal is to create Scouting experiences where Scouts have friends, families feel welcome, parents have confidence, volunteers feel valued, contributions matter, absences are noticed, and people have compelling reasons to return.

Because retention ultimately comes down to a very human decision: Do I want to come back? When people can say, “These are my people. I matter here. I belong here,” we have given them one of the most powerful reasons to answer, “Yes!”
