Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Trek
The STEM Trek is a 12-day backcountry program for high-school aged scouts who have a strong interest in Environmental Science. Immerse yourself in the natural world while learning backcountry skills and experiencing classic Philmont program on this exciting trek!
STEM Trek is an introductory level backcountry trek focused on introducing scouts to the natural world and to Philmont. Led by knowledgeable staff, participants will explore modern scientific principles and how they apply to our everyday lives in the Southern Rockies. The overall experience and knowledge gained will give participants a greater appreciation for the world around them and the outdoor skills to explore it. The program endeavors to kindle the spark of curiosity that they arrive with and will place them in a place to begin a path of discovery in their local communities and home units.
Who May Participate?
To be able to participate in the STEM Trek program, participants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
- Be at least 14 years old by the date the program begins and not yet 18 by the time it ends.
- Be in excellent physical condition, able to hike 10 or more miles per day with a 50-pound backpack.
- To comply with the BSA Youth Protection requirements, each session must have a minimum of two participants from the same gender attend. Individual youth participants may register without a buddy of the same gender, however, if no other youth participants of the same gender register, your session date may need to change or be canceled to comply with BSA Youth Protection requirements.
- Complete a BSA Annual Health and Medical Record. Philmont height and weight requirements will be strictly enforced.

Session #1: June 13 – 25
Session #2: July 15 – 27
Session #3: July 23 – August 4
*All STEM Trek sessions are Co-ed.
Please Note: If less than six participants register for either session by May 1, the session may be canceled. Participants will be promptly notified and alternative programs suggested.
