Philmont’s hunting programs are used to manage the Ranch’s landscapes and wildlife populations. Hunting or harvesting of any game or wildlife through the Sportsman Adventure Program, employee hunts, or any hunting or harvesting activities put on by the Philmont Scout Ranch is a significant management tool in the Philmont Conservation Plan.

Since the 1940s, Philmont has offered guided, invitational big-game hunts to those actively involved in Scouting. Sportsmen are considered upon recommendation from a local council Scout Executive. If approved, Sportsmen will be able to submit an application to hunt, and a deposit must accompany it. If successful in the draw, Sportsmen will receive a letter of acceptance. If unsuccessful, Philmont will refund the deposit, and Sportsmen will remain on the mailing list for future hunts.
